As Chud Johnson News celebrates another year of questionable journalism, we're taking a look back at where it all began: a converted storage closet in what may or may not have been a legal sublet.

"We had a desk," founder Chud Johnson reminisced, looking at photos from 2019. "Well, it was a door on two sawhorses. And Petrina had to edit video on a laptop that was older than some of our interns."

The original CJN "headquarters" featured approximately 47 square feet of workspace, no windows, and what the landlord described as "character" but was actually black mold. Equipment consisted of a single camera "borrowed" from a community college, a microphone held together with electrical tape, and determination.

"We didn't know what we were doing," Petrina added. "We still don't, honestly. But back then we really didn't know."

From these humble beginnings, CJN has grown into a media organization with slightly more square footage and a camera that was actually purchased legally. The original space is now a cryptocurrency mining operation, which somehow feels appropriate.

"We like to think we've come a long way," Chud concluded. "We haven't, but we like to think it."
